"FH Design is both fun to work with and creative. Their team created spaces that work for the operator, in terms of the flow of the space, understanding Return on Investment (ROI), etc. and the guests. FH Design created a memorable experience for all guests to enter and experience the space, so much so that we have a 4-star rating."

The Scope

After an extensive, multi-million dollar renovation, FH Design was hired to turn the Magnolia Hotel into a 182 room out-of-the-ordinary escape in the heart of downtown St. Louis.

FH Design transformed the hotel by blending the old world details of the historic building with modern elements and technological enhancements. The blend is refreshing, innovative, and unexpected, yet tells a seamless brand story that engages and wows guests from the minute they enter the lobby.

The Challenges

  • The renovation of a historically significant building on the National Register of Historic Places. Our desire and need to respect and showcase the building’s rich past and historic elements had to be blended with modern design elements and conveniences in a way that did not seem disjointed or out of place. This required special sensitivity and creativity on our part.
  • Confusing Arrival Experience/Flow Patterns. The entrance to the hotel was formerly located on a hard to find side-street, so we worked with the architect to restore the original hotel canopy with theater lights and move the grand entrance to the more-visible Eighth Avenue. The original lobby also created confusion for guests in terms of arrival and check-in, so we repositioned the floorplan to maximize street presence for a grand entrance, create an arrival sequence for guests, and establish visual wayfinding from the check-in desk to the lounge and restaurant spaces.
  • Lackluster guest rooms and suites. It had been several decades since the guest rooms were renovated. Therefore, the guest rooms and three suites were gutted and redesigned with new furniture, fixtures, and furnishings. Selections blended the historical character of the building with modern, clean lines.  One of the suites also pays homage to Cary Grant, who frequented the hotel after performing at the adjacent Orpheum theatre. The suite captures the glamour and style of the 1930-40’s in a modern setting.

"In St. Louis, FH Design helped to create a buzz and a memorable experience for all guests to enter and experience the space, also created a level of experience for the hotel to get a 4-star rating."

How FH Design Benefited the Client

We asked the right questions on the front end to balance the many moving parts of this project and meet the client’s goals seamlessly. This required us to collaborate with both the design architect and the owner, Stout Hospitality, to understand guest experience preferences and operational goals.

The result is a hotel that speaks to guests from the moment they enter the lobby, maximizes operational functionality, manages flow patterns effectively, and reflects the building’s history and magnificence with a fresh and modern feel that is unique to The Magnolia.

"FH Design comes to the table with more than one idea. The team assisted in creating spaces that work for the operator – the flow of the space, understanding Return on Investment (ROI), and the ease in which guests can get in and out. As designers, FH Design is not just concerned with what the fabric looks like. They are focused on the practicality of design."
